Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth was on August 24 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative talents as a child due to her aunt Denise. The aunt was on in the evening shift as nurse to ensure she could indulge her passion for theater and art in the daytime. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's example how art could serve as an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother, who was a social sassy and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents, however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family has lived for many generations. Her father was a witness to the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma influence her later on to create a film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She began her career working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the watch and search the home of a particular member of the Jury. She was disappointed by her journalism tasks and decided to switch over to the field of public relations. DuVernay found a job immediately out college, as a publicist in the young age of a studio. In 1999, she founded her own company of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective. She is a performer, well-known for her roles in American Experience (1987) and A More Perfect Union (2009).
